Our Partner Mr Michael Szeto was interviewed by HK Feature in the article entitled “Nepali rider’s claim for compensation failed. Legal Aid and District Court took the same view on lack of employment relationship. Lawyer: Actual operation must be considered. Riders’ claims still arguable in future cases”, which was published on 3 March 2025.

As society progresses and the economic landscape becomes increasingly complex, the criteria for determining the existence of an employment relationship also evolves. The emergence of gig workers — who no longer work for just one “employer” but take on jobs from various sources —may requires changes in law to adapt to these changes. In the interview, Michael gave his comments regarding the striking-out of an employees’ compensation claim from a gig worker rider seeking against Deliveroo, as well as legal protection for gig workers.
