Mr Joshua Chu and Mr Michael Szeto co-authored an article concerning equal rights for Artificial Sentience (AKA AI) for The Hong Kong Lawyer

2021-06-28

Our Consultant Mr Joshua Chu and our Partner Mr Michael Szeto have co-written an article entitled “Equal Rights for Artificial Intelligence (AI)? – The Fight Against Alternative Modern Slavery” for the June 2021 issue of Hong Kong Lawyer, the official journal of the Law Society of Hong Kong.

For the past few decades, the concept of artificial sentience through the development of artificial intelligence (“AI”) has made the transition from stuff of science fiction to reality. Even now, AI has been deployed to many walks of life replacing much undesired manual labour of the past. However, the issue of whether there is enslavement of AI (and observable abuse) should be a concern. This article therefore explore into whether AI should be given rights in order to avoid another form of alternative slavery.

The article was also subsequently republished on Lexology, a platform of comprehensive source of international legal updates, analysis and insights.

To read the article, please visit the Hong Kong Lawyer Website to view the original publication or the Lexology Platform (republished version).
